Emergency chimney leak tarping is for the call no one wants to make: water coming through the ceiling next to the chimney during a storm. Our first job is to stop the water. The permanent chimney leak repair comes after the roof is dry.
When it is safe to get on the roof, our crew wraps the chimney and the roof slope above it in a heavy reinforced tarp, runs the top edge up under the shingles at least one course above the chimney, and fastens it with wood battens screwed to the roof deck, not just weighted with bricks. For a crown or open flue letting water in from the top, we cap it with a temporary cover.
We will not climb a steep, iced or lightning-struck roof in the middle of a storm. In those cases we tell you how to contain the water inside, move belongings, and shut off power to any light fixture near the leak, and we come as soon as conditions allow.
Before we leave, we photograph what we found so you have a record for your insurer. Once things dry out, we come back to do the real fix, which is usually step flashing replacement, counter flashing repair or chimney crown repair. Call (833) 583-1301.
